Summer course 2 - August 2016 - Difficult group - Lesson 1

1  DIALOGUE

- Do you have any hobbies?

- Yeah, I love skydiving.

- Wow, that’s amazing ! How often do you do it?

- Well, I try to do it every weekend, but sometimes I can’t make it  it because my friends or parents will come over, or something. But if my weekend’s free – yeah, I definitely head for the airfield.

- So, how many jumps have you had in all?

- More than a hundred altogether. In fact, I’m up for my hundred and fiftieth this month.

- That’s incredible! Why do you like it so much?

- I don’t know. It’s like an addiction. Once you’ve tried it, there’s no way to stop. At least, that is true for me. Anyway, what about you? Do you have any hobbies?

- Well, actually I do. But mine’s very different from yours: I’m really keen on gardening. One day, if you’re not skydiving, why don’t you come over and take a look? My flowers are magnificent in the summer.

- I certainly will!

2 VIDEO: Hobby turned into business

Welcome back. You know, we all have hobbies, we love playing golf, taking pictures, and making jewellery. More people are turning these hobbies into business making money on what they love doing. So, how do you do it? Well, tonight we have one woman’s secret to success in this Project Economy special report.

- This is my classic, my classic Lisa, you know, the dangles and just the different stones and... The look is named after the designer, Lisa Dashiell.

- ...I’d work something, and some of you say: “Oh, I like this, where did you get that?” – “I made it.” – “Wow! Can you make me one?”. And so that’s how it all got started.

Dashiell first discovered her hobby a few years ago, when a bad car accident seriously injured Lisa and her children.

I started making on this these angel..., these angel keychains, and then bookmarks and, naturally I would sit there and pray; the kids were really hurt, really bad, so I would sit there and do that and it actually helped me de-stress.

Recently, another stressful time. Dashiell was let go from her job. She turned disappointment into opportunity, enjoying time with her daughters at home and stringing enough pieces together to create a booming bejewelled business.

Dashiell creates custom orders, sells at craft shows and has plans for eBay and a website.

- We’ve not very many folks that can actually say that the hobby... you know, they can actually make money out of their hobby, and actually bring smiles to people’s faces, so...

More opportunities like that are popping up all over the metro. In 2008 Oak View Mall hosted a home-based business show – a way for entrepreneurs to show off their services and products to a steady stream of customers. General Growth Property says turnout was great – so good they’re planning several shows this year.

- My favourite are the brown...

Dashiell helps her daughters see that hard work pays off, that even when something negative comes along, overcoming that obstacle is a great reward. And sells a great piece of jewellery.

“I think everyone has in the back of their mind they want to do something crazy, like this, and, you know, I just decided, you know, just to do it.

As this isn’t Lisa’s new career, she is interviewing for jobs right now, but even after she returns to work, she says, she will keep her hobby business going.

3. SONG

If you're blue and you don't know
where to go to why don't you go
where fashion sits
Puttin' on the Ritz

Different types who wear a day
coat pants with stripes and cutaway
coat perfect fits
Puttin' on the Ritz

Dressed up like a million-dollar trooper
Tryin' hard to look like Gary Cooper
 (super duper)
Come let's mix where Rockefellers
walk with sticks or umbrellas
in their mitts
Puttin' on the Ritz

Have you seen the well-to-do
Up and down Park Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare
With their noses in the air

High hats, and arrow collars
White spats, and lots of dollars
Spending every dime
For a wonderful time.

If you're blue and you don't know
where to go to why don't you go
where fashion sits
Puttin' on the Ritz

Different types who wear a day
coat pants with stripes and cutaway
coat perfect fits
Puttin' on the Ritz

Dressed up like a million-dollar trooper
Tryin' hard to look like Gary Cooper
 (super duper)
Come let's mix where Rockefellers
walk with sticks or umbrellas
in their mitts
Puttin' on the Ritz
