Dialogue
- Ah! Tom! There you are! Where have you disappeared to?
- Just working, a lot of things to finish before my holiday.
- Is there anything I can help you with?
- Thanks, Meg, I think I've got it all under control.
- So, where are you going to?
- I'm going on a cruise in the Caribbean.
- Sounds fabulous! How long are you going for?
- Three weeks. I really need a break.
- Lucky you! Three weeks in a tropical paradise!.. And who are you going with?
- With my new girlfriend.
- Oh, a new girlfriend! How exciting! Where is she from? How long have you been together? Is it somebody you work with?
- Wow, Meg, that's a lot of questions! Is there something else you'd like to ask me about?
Lisbon
If you're looking for a really relaxing weekend, why don't you go to Lisbon? It's one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Europe. And the good news is you don't have to spend a fortune. Lisbon is still cheap compared to many other European cities.
So where should you stay? It's easy to find accommodation, except in August when it's normally very crowded. if you don't want to spend too much, there are small hostels which are cheap and clean, but quite basic. If you're looking for something more comfortable, then you should try one of the bigger hotels, although these can be expensive. And what about getting around in the city? Well, despite the hills, Lisbon is a good city for walking. But you must take a pair of comfortable shoes and make sure you've got a good map of the city. Public transport is good and cheap. Even the taxis aren't expensive, but they're not recommended for the nervous. Portuguese taxi drivers drive... well, let's say very quickly.
But really the best way to see Lisbon is to do what the Portuguese do and take a tram. And the best tram right of all is the number 28. I strongly recommend it.
There are lots of interesting places to visit in Lisbon, but if you're only going for a weekend, there are two things which you really must see. The first is the castle. It's a long walk to get there, but when you arrive you get the most incredible view of the whole city and the river Tagus.
The other place you mustn't miss is the Expo site, which is now a cultural centre with a fine collection of museums. If you like shopping, you must go to the Baixa area (that's B-A-I-X-A), where you find not only beautiful old traditional shops but also fashionable new clothes shops and if you want a typical souvenir, don't forget to buy a bottle of port.
What about night life in Lisbon? Well, at night I recommend you get a tram up to the Barrio Alto (the high area), which is where all the best restaurants, bars and clubs are. And if you like dancing, why not go to a Brazilian bar? You can hear great music and see some fantastic dancers.
Well, that's all the time we've got to tell you about the enchanting city of Lisbon. Next week we'll be telling you all you need to know about Amsterdam...
Another Town, Another Train
by Abba
Day is dawning and I must go
You're asleep, but still I'm sure you'll know
Why it had to end this way
You and I had a groovy time
But I told you, somewhere down the line
You would have to find me gone
I just have to move along
Just another town, another train
Waiting in the morning rain
Lord, just give my restless soul a little patience
Just another town, another train
Nothing lost and nothing gained
Guess I will spend my life in railway stations
Guess I will spend my life in railway stations
When you wake, I know you'll cry
And the words I wrote to say goodbye
They won't comfort you at all
But in time you will understand
That the dreams we dreamt were made of sand
For a no good bum like me
To live is to be free
Just another town, another train
Waiting in the morning rain
Lord, just give my restless soul a little patience
Just another town, another train
Nothing lost and nothing gained
Guess I will spend my life in railway stations
Guess I will spend my life in railway stations
