1 MR JONES' VISIT

Mr. Jones wrote to his brother Robert: "Would you like to come to the country with us on Sunday?" We have a good cook and I think you'll have a good time and good food. I'll meet you at the bus".

Robert was a shy man. He did not like to cause trouble to others, but he came. The bus arrived late in the evening on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Jones had already had supper but Robert had not even had time for lunch, but he was too shy to say so. He said he had eaten a good supper before he took the bus and was  not hungry. He was so tired after the bus ride that he slept late on Sunday morning.

"Don't forget to give Robert a good breakfast", Mrs. Jones said to the cook. But the cook forgot, and Robert was too shy to ask her. They spent half of the day in the open air and arrived back at 2 o'clock. "We aren't going to eat until 4 o'clock because we had such a large breakfast," Mr. Jones said to Robert. "Would you like to go swimming?" "No, I don't think so," Robert said. "In fact, I don't feel very well. I haven't felt good for several hours." Mr. Jones got worried and insisted that Robert should see a doctor. Robert didn't want to cause any trouble, but they went.

The doctor could not discover the trouble. The doctor said the symptoms Robert had were sometimes the result of the wrong food.

"You'd better not eat much supper", he said to Robert. Robert was too weak to protest. The cook gave him some thin soup for supper. He said good-bye to his brother at 8 o'clock, and immediately ate two meals, one after the other, in a restaurant. While he ate, he wrote a note to thank his brother for a good time. "I had fun," he wrote while he ate a second dessert. "You're lucky to have such a good cook. I shall never forget her meals".

2 UNHEALTHY EATING HABITS

Journalist The kids are out on summer break, but if you don't watch it, your kids can develop some pretty unhealthy eating habits. Here today is Doctor Alex Adams with the UW Health Pediatric Fitness Clinic to talk about the top five reasons that kids and adults eat when they're not hungry. Do you see this happening more in the summer?

Doctor Adams Well, I think the summer's a time when there're not always very programmed, especially on pre-teens and teens and so, yes, we do see more waking in the summer because of these reasons but throughout the year… as well.

Journalist So, the top number one reason is boredom.

Doctor Adams Boredom. So, kids are bored: “What should we do? We don't want to go outside and play because it's too hot» or «we don't know what to do» so they go to the fridge and start choosing things or go to the pantry and start making bad choices.

Journalist And another reason is to stay awake or alert?

Doctor Adams Right. So, what I see is a lot of teenagers through on Facebook or the Internet late at night. They tend to want just to stay awake and alert because eating keeps you mentally… sort of more sharp.

Journalist Sure, it gives you something to do, doesn't make you feel sort of tired - calories, especially at night too, not the best time… Another reason is to meet emotional and sensory needs?

Doctor Adams Sure. So, there are many people who eat because they are sad or stressed and typically, you know, you're reaching for the chocolate or the canola bars, candy, you know, things like that – to meet those needs. And learning how to avoid those is really important.

Journalist And you also say you believe watching too much advertising…

Doctor Adams … Yes, there are many studies and I think common sense would say «Why do we have all these ads with high fat fast foods»? It's because it works! And people eat too much. So the more TV the kids watch, the more they're going to make unhealthy choices, the more they whine for parents to buy unhealthy things at the grocery store.

Journalist And the fifth reason – food addiction?

Doctor Adams Yes. So, certain foods are highly addictive, I would say things like Mountain Dew, certain kinds of chips or things – very high salt, high sugar, high fat foods – really hit the pleasure centres in our brain and make us want to eat the whole bag instead of just a few chips. So, who of us hasn't eat… gotten a Doritos bag and eaten the whole thing? «Oh my gosh, what happened?»

Journalist «…'Cause they're so good?»

Doctor Adams Exactly!

Journalist So, in terms of those five… Parents… the best advice for them is to have these conversations with their kids?

Doctor Adams Have the conversation, don't have that kind of foods in the house that are really easy to grab, especially in the summer when they aren't supervised and make sure there are easy things to grab that are healthy, like fruits and vegetables or… you know, fruit chips…

Journalist … And very quickly, I just want to double check, because we've been talking all day about keeping fit. With parents who have kids aren't exercising and this… Any important advice?

Doctor Adams I would say if they can stay out of the sun, that's the best advice, stay cool by using water, you know, dumping the water on themselves as well, as well as drinking it in order to stay cool and stay in shape.

Journalist Okay, Doctor Adams, thank you so much, we appreciate it. If you'd like to learn more about the services offered at the UW Health Pediatric Fitness Clinic, well, go to our web channel and click on news links. We will be right back…

3 LAND DOWN UNDER

Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said

Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six-foot-four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
And he said

I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover
Yeah

Lyin' in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said

Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover
